In March 2021, Texas Governor Greg Abbott executed a joint mission between the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas Military Department. The mission, called Operation Lone Star is to fight trafficking of humans and drugs. In May 2021, Abbott issued a declaration to “use available resources to enforce all applicable federal and state laws to prevent the criminal activity along the border, including criminal trespassing, smuggling, and human trafficking, and to assist Texas counties in their efforts to address those criminal activities.” The mission now boasts "290,700 migrant apprehensions and more than 18,000 criminal arrests, with more than 15,400 felony charges reported."
Texas has been forced to get creative in fighting against the invasion. Operation Lone Star has been placing steel shipping containers along the gaps in the border. They have also tried buying more of the same wall material from the Trump administrations wall. These actions are making history as no state has ever been in this position without federal aid.
In August 2021, Abbott announced a new tactic in the operation. The plan was to bus migrants from Texas to migrant sanctuary cities. Texas cannot be expected to continue accepting illegal immigrants in their population. The busses have been directed to New York City and District of Columbia.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams is upset with Texas Governor Greg Abbott's migrant bussings. New York state government has requested federal assistance with illegal immigrants. What happened to New York being a sanctuary city? The best they can come up with is putting random illegal immigrants in expensive hotels.
District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser has declared the situation a humanitarian crisis. Over 4000 migrants have been bussed in from Texas. She has called for National Guard deployment and Federal assistance. Bowser has now admitted that the problem will continue to escalate.
Abbott has invited Bowser and Adams to the Texas border to "see the humanitarian crisis first hand." More than two million illegal immigrants have crossed the border in one year of Biden's Presidency. Comparing the migrant population between border states and the distant "sanctuary" New York, the difference is from thousands to millions. There are many more migrants in border states. Before Abbott began busing migrants to New York and Washington DC, the federal government under Biden was bussing them to everywhere else. Most of the migrants do not report back to immigration authorities.
In Texas, 325.9 million lethal doses of fentanyl has been seized. People are dying from overdoses across the US. Men, women, and children often perish in the hands of coyotes. Human trafficking conditions involve deadly desert heat, inadequate drinking water, and being crammed into places with no escape. The traffickers do not care about the lives of their clients. Many of the people will remain in debt to cartels. Women and children are raped and sold.
In August 2022, Bidens administration is finally filling gaps in the border wall starting with Yuma, Arizona. In Yuma, there has been at least thirty five migrant deaths over the past year. Is the Federal government ready to step in and do it's job? This might just be an attempt to gain credit before the election.
